In Australia, men account for 70% of quoted sources and 66% of experts in news stories. And in New Zealand, only 17% of sports sources were women.
A 2019 study found that 70% of journalists at Buzzfeed Australia were women, with 59% of quotes being by women.
The proportion of women in the broadcasting industry has increased from 28% to 44% in the last 40 years.
Of the 21 Australian films at the 2014 Australian box office, only 14% were directed by women. 37 Australian feature films and documentaries were released in cinemas last year and only 16% were directed by women.
The Gender Matters initiative has $5 million funding and in 2016, $3.7 million was distributed to fund the development of 45 female driven stories and 13 female driven businesses.
