The 2022 Global Gender Gap Report (GGGR) indicates that sub-Saharan Africa has bridged 68.7% of its gender gap, the highest gender gap score in 16 years.
However, a study of Namibian media by African Media Barometer in 2022 found that all heads of the country's newspapers are male, even though most newspaper journalists are female.
In Rwanda, the State of Gender Equality 2019 report found that 21.5% of media representation was of women, whilst 78.5% was of men.
In Kenya, a 2021 study found that 49% of the Gender Desk story bylines were women, and 42% of journalists in Kenya are women.
In Uganda, 20% of the media is comprised of women.
